The Revelation of Christ (Revelation 1-5) >Seven Churches >First Message, Ephesus. We now come to the seven messages to the churches of Asia in Revelation chapters 2 and 3. In this lesson we look at the message to Ephesus, the church that had left its first love (Revelation 2:1-7).
The messages to several churches begin, “I know your works . . .” Ephesus is rebuked for not doing the works they did at first (Rev. 2:5), and Sardis likewise has not completed the work it ought to have done for Jesus (Rev. 3:2). It bears repeating that “works” are not a bad thing in the Bible.
Before actually beginning the exposition of the message to Ephesus, it would be helpful to consider a few of the distinctive and common features that can be observed in each of the messages to the churches of Asia Minor as we find them in Revelation 2 and 3.
In Revelation 2–3 Christ speaks of His coming explicitly in six of the messages to the seven churches of Asia. He does so in three of the messages through a form of the verb5e rxomai (erchomai, "I will come"1) (2:5, 16; 3:11). In two of the messages he does so with the verb.
