Socio-Economic Features. Rural development is generally characterized by its emphasis on local economic development (Moseley, 2003). There are two traditional sectors of the rural economies: agriculture and extractive industries, but they vary in importance between Global North and Global South.

By conducting a systematic review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the various ways in which rurality has been defined and operationalized in empirical and quantitative analyses.
The hard core of what constitutes the essence of rural development will emerge as the strength, scope and impact of current rural development practices become clear. Much will depend on the capacity of scholars to develop an empirically grounded theory.
