17 Αυγ 2023 · Surgical excision (vermilionectomy) ensures the histopathologic examination of the entire vermilion and is the treatment of choice for actinic cheilitis with high-grade dysplasia on biopsy. Drug-induced cheilitis: Lip moisturizers, emollients, and cessation of offending drugs lead to complete resolution of symptoms.

It usually involves the lip vermilion and the vermilion border, but the surrounding skin and the oral mucosa may also be affected [ 1 ]. Common symptoms include erythema, dryness, scaling, fissuring, edema, itching, and burning.
Angular cheilitis (AC) is a clinical entity first described in the XIX century, characterized by erythema, rhagades, ulcerations, and crusting of one or both lip commissures and perilabial skin, responsible of an unpleasant and painful discomfort.
Actinic cheilitis is the lip form of actinic keratosis due to chronic sun exposure. It is also called actinic cheilosis, solar cheilitis, and sometimes, actinic cheilitis with histological atypia. Actinic cheilitis also describes lip involvement in actinic prurigo, a rare form of photosensitivity.

Lip vermilion is a transition zone between the skin and the oral mucosa that exhibits a thin layer of epithelium and has no cutaneous attachments (sweat and sebaceous glands, and hair follicles) and is therefore more susceptible to invasion of pathogens and irritation by climatic, chemical, physical and mechanical factors [1].
Methods. We conducted a systematic review to define the best therapies for actinic cheilitis in clinical response and recurrences. Results. We first identified 444 papers, and 49 were finally considered, including 789 patients and 843 treated areas.
