Oxygen is a chemical element with the symbol O and atomic number 8. It is a member of the chalcogen group in the periodic table, a highly reactive nonmetal, and a potent oxidizing agent that readily forms oxides with most elements as well as with other compounds.
24 Οκτ 2024 · Natural oxygen is a mixture of three stable isotopes: oxygen-16 (99.759 percent), oxygen-17 (0.037 percent), and oxygen-18 (0.204 percent). Several artificially prepared radioactive isotopes are known.
Oxygen is the 8th element in the periodic table and has a symbol of O and atomic number of 8. It has an atomic weight of 15.999 and a mass number of 16. Oxygen has eight protons and eight neutrons in its nucleus, and eight electrons in two shells.
28 Αυγ 2024 · Oxidation States: Oxygen typically exhibits an oxidation state of -2 in most of its compounds, such as water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). However, in compounds like hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and ozone (O₃), oxygen exhibits -1 and 0 oxidation states, respectively.
The description of the element in its natural form. Biological role. The role of the element in humans, animals and plants. Natural abundance. Where the element is most commonly found in nature, and how it is sourced commercially.
Natural oxygen is a mixture of three isotopes. Natural occurring oxygen-18 is stable and available commercially, as is water (H 2 O with 15% 18 O). Commercial oxygen consumption in the U.S. is estimated at 20 million short tons per year and the demand is expected to increase substantially.
Physical Properties. Oxygen is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas. It readily dissolves in water, and more conveniently in freshwater as compared to seawater. The freezing point of oxygen is −218.79 °C, and it condenses at −182.95 °C. Oxygen, in both of its liquid and solid state, appear as clear, sky-blue color compound.
