What are the symptoms of chicken pox in babies? The main symptom of chicken pox is a rash that appears in groups of raised red spots which develop into fluid-filled blisters. These blisters break and form scabs which will eventually drop off. The rash often starts on the chest and the face.
At highest risk of severe disease are infants whose mothers develop chicken pox (not shingles) 7 days before to 7 days after delivery. In these babies IM VZIG should be given as soon as possible and within 7 days of birth or within 7 days of onset of the disease in the mother if this is longer.
When to see a doctor. You should take your child to see a GP if: they get large, sore, red areas around the rash, which may indicate a secondary bacterial infection. they become increasingly unwell, are very drowsy, have a high fever or are not drinking. you are concerned for any reason.
Key points. Chickenpox is usually a self-limiting disease in immunocompetent children, requiring symptomatic treatment only. Treatment with aciclovir is reserved for premature neonates or those <7 days of age, immunocompromised children, and children with systemic or central nervous system disease.
