Chickenpox is infectious from 24 hours before the rash appears until the vesicles are dry or have crusted over, usually about 5 days after the onset of the rash. The virus persists in sensory nerve ganglia of the dorsal root. Years later, it can reactivate and cause herpes zoster (shingles).
Pictures of the typical chickenpox rash are available on the NHS website. Look for signs of complications such as secondary bacterial infection of skin lesions, pneumonia, and encephalitis. Prolonged or recurrent fever is suggestive of secondary infection.
