This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this volume which is about the history of child protection in the U.S. during the Gilded Age. It describes the case of Mary Ellen Wilson, a child abuse victim who was rescued by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) from her foster parents.
Mary Ellen Wilson (March 1864 – October 30, 1956), also called Mary Ellen McCormack, was an American victim of child abuse whose case led to the creation of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the first child protection agency in the world. [1]
