22 Ιαν 2024 · Parental incarceration can lead to the development of many mental health problems in children and adolescents. They experience a significantly higher rate of mental health difficulties compared to children who do not have parents in prison (Jones et al., 2013).
In the group of prisoners’ children, girls reported a higher level of problems than boys in the following categories: withdrawn, somatic complaints, anxious/depressed, thought problems, attention problems, delinquent behavior, internalizing behavior problems, and externalizing behavior problems.
Almost a third of young offenders had a mental health need (31%), whereas 29% had a need because of some form of risky behaviour. About one in three young people had educational or work needs (36%) or needs in relation to violence to people and property (35%).

One potential impact of parental incarceration and the stressors associated with it is compromised emotional well-being of children. Children and adolescents with incarcerated parents are thought to be at elevated risk for mental health problems, though research has produced mixed results.
