In computing, Chinese character encodings can be used to represent text written in the CJK languages—Chinese, Japanese, Korean—and (rarely) obsolete Vietnamese, all of which use Chinese characters.

Try e.g. to encode the Swedish characters åäö with utf-8 and then decode them with iso-8859-1, or try to encode 明伯 (simplified Chinese meaning 'to understand') with utf-8 and decode with GB 18030.
First it checks to see if characters in the document fit the code ranges for the given encoding system. Then it checks the characters in the document against frequency tables for a given encoding. The encoding system that scores highest on this ranking is the guess shown in the results.
Chinese Character Converters. At the moment, all Chinese Character converters only support Traditional Chinese input. For Simplified Chinese and Shinjitai, I recommend using a converter such as this one to obtain a proper input sequence for use in these tools.
The encoding standard adopted in mainland China in 1981, GB2312-1980 includes 6,763 simplified characters. The standard also includes 682 non-Han characters for a total of 7,445 characters, and many font vendors incorporate extensions bringing the total up to 7,600.
