23 Οκτ 2023 · It is timely to revisit issues pertinent to the study of Chinese music history and historiography. Chinese music has a long history, as recorded in different types of sources—historical writings, archaeological findings, and music notations, to name just some.

In the period between 3,500 and 2,000 years ago, Chinese rulers constructed elaborate tombs containing weapons, vessels, and remains of servants and, in some cases, full ensembles of musical instruments such as stone chimes (known today as qing), ovoid clay ocarinas (xun, 2005.14), and drums.

The twentieth century saw much pioneering archaeological excavation of these musical artifacts (Li, 1996).
