Chromium ore is an important metallic raw material that is widely used in the metallurgy industry, chemical industry, and refractory. Clarifying the consumption mechanism of chro-mium ore is crucial for policy making, enterprise production, and commodity investment.
1 Μαρ 2015 · The basic properties of chromium are described, subsequently the discovery of chromium ores and the various methods of producing metallic chromium.
Chromite is crucial for the production of ferrochrome, an alloying agent in manufacturing stainless steel. Chromite provides the corrosive resistance properties in stainless steel, making it an ideal material for use in a variety of industries. When chromite, the mineral, is extracted from the earth’s mantle, it is referred to as chrome ore.
In March 2022, the leading import sources for ferrochromium into the United States were, in descending order of quantity by gross weight, Russia, Finland, and Germany (table 6), whereas the leading import sources for chromium metal were the United Kingdom, China, and France (table 7).
High-carbon ferrochromium accounted for 87% of the chromium material consumed in February 2020. Stainless and heat-resisting steels were the leading end uses, consuming 90% of chromium materials.
Reported consumption of chromium, on a gross weight basis, in November 2021 was unchanged compared with consumption of chromium in October 2021 and decreased by 3% compared with consumption in November 2020.
Events, Trends, and Issues: Chromium is consumed in the form of ferrochromium to produce stainless steel. South Africa was the leading chromite ore producer. Ore production was estimated to increase in 2021 owing to recovery of the market following the COVID-19 pandemic.
