As American foundations pursued a new open-ended philanthropy, one that broke away from centuries of targeted giving, and mass philanthropic institutions systematized fundraising to the broad American public, the nonprofit sector quite naturally began to weigh in on public issues.
This generational change in the scale and scope of giving frames a period of substantial development of strategies designed for greater impact. The two strategies that are the hallmark of the beginning of the period are strategic philanthropy and capacity building.
