There are few urban areas within the desert: the largest is Ciudad Juárez with almost two million inhabitants; Chihuahua, Saltillo, and Torreón; and the US cities of El Paso and Albuquerque.
30 Δεκ 2022 · As with many deserts, much of the Chihuahuan Desert has little to no inhabitants. However, there are several significant cities and urban areas within its vast expanse. Nearly 2 million people live in Ciudad Juarez in the State of Chihuahua. Other Mexican cities include Torreon Saltillo and the city of Chihuahua.
The 118 mi (190 km) of river that form the southern park boundary include the spectacular canyons of Santa Elena, Mariscal, and Boquillas. The Rio Grande, which meanders through this portion of the Chihuahuan Desert, has cut deep canyons with nearly vertical walls through three uplifts made primarily of limestone.
The Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range, part of the continental spine that also includes the Rocky Mountains, dominates the state's terrain, and is home to the state's greatest attraction, Las Barrancas del Cobre, or Copper Canyon, a canyon system larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon.
The Chihuahuan Desert, long a corridor for trade between Mexico City and Santa Fe, New Mexico, is now home to five million people. The Rio Grande basin covers 172,000 square miles, crossing three U.S. states, more than a dozen Native American nations and five Mexican states.

21 Ιουν 2021 · The park protects a stunning, diverse swath of the Chihuahuan Desert, deep canyons, and the Chisos Mountains, all of it hemmed in by the mighty Rio Grande. Depending on when and where you go, it can sometimes feel like the roadrunner and yucca plants outnumber the people.
