The CME Feeder Cattle Index™ is based upon a sample of transactions from these weight/frame score categories: 700 to 899 pound Medium and Large Frame #1 feeder steers, and 700 to 899 pound Medium and Large Frame #1-2 feeder steers. The sample consists of all feeder cattle auction, direct trade, video sale, and Internet sale transactions
Live Cattle and Feeder Cattle futures and options trade electronically on the CME Globex electronic trading platform. Cattle options are also available available via open outcry on the trading floor. Live Cattle are physically delivered contracts, while Feeder Cattle are cash-settled contracts.
Futures and options on live cattle and feeder cattle are traded at the CME Group. Both the live and feeder cattle futures contracts trade in terms of cents per pound. Prices - CME live cattle futures prices (Barchart.com symbol LE) in early 2023 extended the 4-year rally that began in 2020.

CME index was designed to use USDA-AMS Feeder Cattle Reports from 12 major feeder cattle producing states: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.
