The coagulase test helps to identify Staphylococcus aureus which produces the enzyme coagulase (coagulates) plasma from coagulase-negative staphylococci (CONS).
10 Αυγ 2022 · Coagulase test is used to differentiate Staphylococcus aureus (positive) which produce the enzyme coagulase, from S. epidermis and S. saprophyticus (negative) which do not produce coagulase. i.e Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus (CONS).
18 Ιαν 2022 · A coagulase test is a biochemical test that is used to differentiate Staphylococcus aureus from other Staphylococci species like S. epidermidis and S. saprophyticus on the basis of the ability to produce the coagulase enzyme.
The coagulase test differentiates strains of Staphylococcus aureus from S. epidermidis and other coagulase-negative species. S. aureus strains are usually capable of coagulating EDTA-treated plasma in the tube test and will produce clumps of cells in the slide test.
Ideally a Gram stain of the colony should be performed and tests made for catalase and coagulase production, allowing the coagulase-positive S aureus to be identified quickly. Another very useful test for S aureus is the production of thermostable deoxyribonuclease.
Identify that the coagulase test is useful for differentiating between Staphylococcus sp. Tell how the two types of coagulase tests work and which one is more definitive. Successfully conduct and interpret the coagulase test.
Diagnosis of staphylococcal infections is by Gram stain and culture of infected material. Susceptibility tests should be done because methicillin-resistant organisms are now common and require alternative therapy.
