The Aberfan disaster was the catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip on 21 October 1966. The tip had been created on a mountain slope above the Welsh village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, and overlaid a natural spring.
Tipping began to the west of the canal during the 1914-18 War when Tip 1 was started. This rose to a height of 85 feet and was composed of mine rubbish and discarded coal from the preparation plant and boiler ash. It was estimated that it contained about 235,000 cubic yards of material.
