The Coconino Sandstone forms the two prominent white cliffs in the middle distance in this view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Coconino Sandstone is a geologic formation named after its exposure in Coconino County, Arizona.

20 Φεβ 2022 · The sand grains of the Coconino Sandstone were deposited by wind across large coastal sand dunes about 275 million years ago. Each of these layers has unique trace fossils and environmental features preserved in the rock.
The only fossils known from the Coconino Sandstone are trace fossils (tracks of both invertebrates and vertebrates) (Figure 34), with some tetrapod traces indicating that they are from the Early Permian biochron (approximately 280 Ma). The Kaibab Formation forms the rim of Grand Canyon, and is the youngest Paleozoic rock in Grand Canyon.
The Coconino Sandstone is a Permian rock formation, part of the Paleozoic sequence of rocks that crops out along the southern border of the Colorado Plateau and is beautifully exposed in the Grand Canyon.
The Galeros Formation is a mainly greenish formation composed of interbedded sandstone, limestone, and shale. Fossilized stromatolites are found in the Galeros. [ 20 ] The Kwagunt Formation consists of black shale and red to purple mudstone with some limestone. [ 21 ]
