Community growth and annexations of smaller rural districts increased student enrollment to a point where a new modern high school facility was needed. In 1956, construction began on Coldwater High School, a $1.3 million, 34-classroom building at the Legg Airport site on North Fremont Street.

Michigan's State Public School at Coldwater was a model institution at Coldwater, Michigan, for the education and support of dependent and ill-treated children of the state. It was established by an act of the state legislature in 1871, but was not formally opened until 1874.
The records contained in this work come from three sources: the federal census documents for the state school from 1880 through 1930 (excluding 1890 which was lost to fire); the Oceana County Michigan County Poor Farm ledger; and the Gratiot County Michigan County Poor Farm ledgers.
