Colonel John Brewer was the founder of the city of Brewer, Maine. He married Martha Graves of Sudbury,MA, and later, after her death in 1808, was married to Ruth Prescott, a widow, from Augusta. They remained married until she died in 1818.
John Brewer, son of John and Elizabeth (Howard) Brewer, died April 5, 1690. He married, in 1685, Sarah, daughter of Colonel Henry and Sarah Ridgely, the former of whom came from England, and died in 1710.

John Brewer died in Virginia in 1635 and his widow soon afterwards married Thomas Butler, “Clarke and Parson off Denbie.†(Later Warwick.) This is evidenced by a grant of land to Thomas Butler of 1000 acres in Isle of Wight, 11 July 1635.
In June of 1769, John married Martha Graves of Sudbury and their first child was born a year later on May 1st , 1770 at Worcester . They named him Josiah. The same year that his first son was born , the 27 year old Brewer decided to begin a settlement in Maine and start a sawmill.
John was probably the youngest. John obtained his early education in Weston, and finished it at Worcester. As a man, John Brewer was described as “slender, but rugged, a mind well balanced and sound rather than aspiring, and a countenance sedate rather than brilliant”.
