1 Φεβ 2021 · Providence Colony (also known as Providence Plantation, modern-day Providence, Rhode Island, USA) was a settlement established in 1636 CE by the Puritan separatist theologian and pastor Roger Williams (l. 1603-1683 CE) after he was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
In 1644, Williams returned to Providence from England with a charter that established Rhode Island as a democracy and left decisions concerning religion to majority rule.
Williams was banished from the colony of Massachusetts for his dissident beliefs and in 1643 founded the religiously tolerant colony of Rhode Island. Rhode Island was “a shelter for persons distressed of conscience.”
Religious minorities suffered from social and legal discrimination, as well as persecution, from the very founding of the English colonies. In 1635, the Massachusetts Bay Colony expelled Roger Williams for opposing the Puritan church’s control over civil law.
