An additional study found a high-quality colonoscopy is associated with over 17 years' worth of lower colorectal cancer risk. Colonoscopy in the very elderly has lower efficacy for increasing life expectancy, and the benefits may be outweighed by increased risk. This is partially attributed to the fact that the elderly are more likely to die of other causes before dying from CRC.
Core Tip: Clinical guidelines do not recommend colorectal cancer (CRC) screening after age 75. Given the improvements in CRC treatment and post-treatment survival, and increasing life expectancy in the population, the current approach to CRC screening in older adults needs to be revised.
