Colonoscopy in very elderly patients (over 80 years of age) carries a greater risk of complications, adverse events and morbidity than in younger patients, and is associated with lower completion rates and higher chance of poor bowel preparation.

An additional study found a high-quality colonoscopy is associated with over 17 years' worth of lower colorectal cancer risk. Regardless of new findings, current colonoscopy and colorectal cancer screening recommendations remain in place.

The risk is even higher in women, with 27% of cases diagnosed at the age of 80 years and above, with 40% of deaths occurring in this age group.1 Although age is not a modi fiable risk factor for developing CRC, the benets of fi screening for CRC in older adults is less clear.
