A variant of the original M1918 BAR, the Colt Monitor machine rifle, remains the lightest production automatic firearm chambered for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge, though the limited capacity of its standard 20-round magazine tended to hamper its utility in that role.

Visually, the Monitors differ from the BAR with its use of a pistol grip, different compensator and different handguard.
The stg was so effective because of its intermediate caliber allowing it to be light, and controllable in full auto. Even if you could make a BAR as light as a stg (which you can't) it would be so uncomfortable in full auto that everyone would just use it in semi auto anyway.

Essentially an improved version of the Browning Automatic Rifle, the Monitor was the culmination of Colt's work on improving the BAR after World War I. Sold from 1925 to about 1931, the Monitor was marketed to law enforcement agencies and some militaries, but failed to sell well in either regard.
