Columbus is a consolidated city-county located on the west-central border of the U.S. state of Georgia. Columbus lies on the Chattahoochee River directly across from Phenix City, Alabama.

Muscogee County is part of the Columbus, GA–AL, metropolitan statistical area. The only other city in the county was Bibb City, a company town that disincorporated in December 2000, two years after its mill closed permanently.

Founded in 1828 and carved out of the wilderness, it had by 1840 become a leading inland cotton port with a thriving textile.
15 Δεκ 2003 · Located on the Chattahoochee River and adjacent to the Alabama state line, the county is home to Columbus, the third largest city in the state. Muscogee County and the city of Columbus formed the first consolidated government in Georgia in 1971.

30 Μαρ 2004 · The lure of making money from cotton and the waterpower of the Chattahoochee River shaped the Muscogee County seat of Columbus for more than a century after the Georgia legislature created the city in 1828. Located at the head of river navigation, Columbus first boomed as a cotton-trading center.
