Upgrading to a DOCSIS 3.1 modem is probably a good idea. You will have access to more of the cable node's available bandwidth, so your internet will slow down less when your node is really busy. It was worth the modem upgrade to me. The one thing to note when you look at the compatible devices page is that pretty much everything that fully supports 400Mbps also supports the gig plans. To give yourself the best upgrade benefit, get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem.
For a modem, the S33 or MB8611 are good choices, and will leave some room for speed upgrades in the future. For a router/firewall check out Firewalla. The gold plus is a little on the expensive side but would match the 2.5G port on your modem.
