Fossils are found in every county in the state, but southwestern Ohio is known around the world for its well-preserved marine fossils. Rocks exposed here were deposited about 450 million years ago, during the Ordovician Period, when Ohio was covered by a shallow sea.
You can find fossils in Ohio at fossil collecting sites in many state parks like Trammel Fossil Park, Oakes Quarry Park, and Caesar Creek State Park. In general, fossils are found in Paleozoic rock formations and include many species of trilobites, brachiopods, crinoids, and more.
