The four major types of radiation include alpha particles, beta particles, neutrons, and electromagnetic radiation. We are exposed to different levels of radiation in our everyday lives, including from healthcare (X-rays, CT scans, mammograms), air travel, building materials, cigarette smoking, cell phones, wearable technology, and more.
By far the largest source of natural radiation exposure comes from varying amounts of uranium and thorium in the soil around the world. The radiation exposure due to cosmic rays is very dependent on altitude, and slightly on latitude: people who travel by air, thereby, increase their exposure to radiation.

Today, the most common human-made sources of ionizing radiation are medical devices, including x-ray machines and Computed Tomography (CT) scanners.

We can classify radiation according to the effects it produces on matter, into ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation includes cosmic rays, X rays and the radiation from radioactive materials. Non-ionizing radiation includes ultraviolet light, radiant heat, radio waves and microwaves.
