The wide array of historic images, range from the earliest known daguerreotype of Sacramento, made around 1850, of the New World steamship docked along the city's Embarcadero, to contemporary views that capture the development of the Sacramento and the surrounding region.
The family history begins in 1846 when Herman Kahn left his home in Bavaria, Germany, for a new life with his sister’s family in the United States. Nothing is reported until Herman Kahn (now changed to Cone) opened a wholesale grocery business, H. Cone & Sons, in Baltimore in 1870.

Cone Mills is at the very heart of that history. Founded in 1891 in Greensboro, North Carolina, the Cone Mills plant made tough-as-nails workwear for an era in which most Americans couldn’t afford to buy more than one pair of jeans a year.
When Cone Denim's White Oak mill closed down in 2017, the U.S. lost its first, and nearly last, producer of vintage-style, selvage denim. But the story wasn't quite over yet.
