The Confederate Cipher Disk is made of brass. The outer disk has a diameter of approx. 2 1/4 inch, whilst the inner disk measures approx 1 1/2 inch. On each of the disks, the alphabet is written out clockwise in the usual order (A-Z).

15 Απρ 2021 · The idea is that once you guess the length of the cipher, you can reduce the task to breaking a simple substitution cipher which can be done via frequency analysis (can you see why?). Confederate generals used Vigenère regularly during the civil war, and their messages were routinely cryptanalzed by Union officers.
