The Confederate Cipher Disk is made of brass. The outer disk has a diameter of approx. 2 1/4 inch, whilst the inner disk measures approx 1 1/2 inch. On each of the disks, the alphabet is written out clockwise in the usual order (A-Z).

A cipher disk is an enciphering and deciphering tool developed in 1470 by the Italian architect and author Leon Battista Alberti. He constructed a device, (eponymously called the Alberti cipher disk) consisting of two concentric circular plates mounted one on top of the other.
A good example of the Vigenère Cipher is the Confederate Cipher Disk that was used as a field cipher during the American Civil War (1861-1865). It was usually supplied in a small leather bag (see below). CSA stands for Confederate States of America, and SS means Secret Service.
