There are more than 100 species of deciduous (hardwood) trees and 25 species of coniferous (softwood) trees that grow in Ohio. The most abundant tree species are oak varieties, red maple, sugar maple, yellow poplar and hickory varieties. Many species of plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fungi rely on Ohio forests for habitat.
