Every state has a consumer protection law that prohibits deceptive practices, and many prohibit unfair or unconscionable practices as well. These statutes, commonly known as Unfair and Decep-tive Acts and Practices or UDAP statutes, provide bedrock protections for consumers.

Consumer protection laws safeguard purchasers of goods and services against defective products and deceptive, fraudulent business practices. Historically, under the common law doctrine of caveat emptor, consumers had very little protection from misleading sales, requiring consumers to inspect all transactions themselves.
