The first part of this book introduced the basic medical orientations, doctrines, practices, and questions that developed in the context of the three main forms of Buddhism. The second part now turns to tracing their circulation, development, and transformation over the last two millennia.
The Buddhist medical literature lays out moral guidelines and ethics for a health-care practitioner and this has corollaries in the principles of medical ethics: nonmaleficence, benevolence, justice, and autonomy.
Dividing the essay into two sections, contemporary developments and histor-ical background, reflects the difference between a dialogue between Buddhism and science, and a dialogue about Buddhism and science. In both cases, distinctions were drawn that can make these dialogues more fruitful.
