I wanted to share that I recently had a very positive service experience with Continental Airlines. I used their website, phoned their reservations agent, and as a result, joined their air miles program. The site worked well, and was easy to understand and navigate.
I've been using Continental from Bristol (and prior to that Birmingham) for the last 8 years and never had a problem! They do use 757 aircraft which means leg room is a bit tight, but if you get up a couple of times it isn't too bad.
We've flown several times on Continental to the US (New York, Boston, Orlando, Charleston). On the upside you get to avoid Heathrow, on the downside the planes are quite old and we find the service very basic. Whilst we don't expect great things from an airline meal we find the food inedible and opt now to take pick up a baguette to have on route.
The flight into Newark is only by Continental Airlines. Delta operates a codeshare with them on that route. Continental is a good airline with nice service, although if the aircraft is the 757, it isn't the best transatlantic plane. You'll be fine.
Virgin Atlantic seem to be an "all or nothing" airline. Don't get me wrong, I've always had stupendous service from them, once even requesting a feedback form so I could tell them so, but others have terrible experiences. I've flown probaby 10-12 times with them, and rarely a problem.
