16 Φεβ 2023 · Cottonwood tree identification. Swamp cottonwoods can be identified by their Cordate (heart-shaped) large oval leaves that are up to 6” (15 cm) long and with an elongated tip. The leaf edges are slightly serrated. Cottonwood Tree Problems. Cottonwood trees are not the ideal type of landscaping tree for small or medium-sized backyards.
A very large, long-lived tree of wet places growing up to 150 feet and living up to 200 years. The seeds are released in large quantities with the cottony materil attached, giving this tree its common name. Grows along streams and lakes in wet soils. Mostly present in western part of the state.

Narrow-leaf cottonwood grows along streambanks in dry mountains, desert shrublands, and prairie grasslands and in coniferous forests with willows and alders, at elevations of 900-2450 meters. It is commonly found on narrow, periodically flooded benches adjacent to streams and smaller rivers.
Description. Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh., eastern cottonwood, is a fast-growing tree which reaches 80 to l00 feet in height and 3 to 4 feet in diameter. It is a relatively short-lived tree, seldom surviving for more than 80 years. The leaves are broadly triangular, ovate in outline, 3 to 5 inches long and nearly as wide.
Black cottonwood grows on alluvial sites, riparian habitats, and moist woods on mountain slopes, at elevations of 0–2100(–2750) meters. It often forms extensive stands on bottomlands of major streams and rivers at low elevations along the Pacific Coast, west of the Cascade Range.
