Since 2013, November 4th is celebrated as the day of the Patriotic Symbols. The flag is divided into four quarters and has three colors (blue, red and white). The first flag of Panama was made by María Ossa de Amador. White represents peace to make a home in the new nation.
The lower right quarter contains a horn of plenty (cornucopia), symbol of the richness of the country. The left quarter shows a winged wheel, symbol of traffic. The eagle above the shield is the American eagle, as the USA was the first to recognise Panama as an independent country.

The national symbols of Panamá are prescribed by the Single Text of Law No. 34 of 1949 "Adopting the flag, the anthem and the coat of arms as national symbols and regulating their use", which includes the amendments prescribed by Law No. 2 of 2012, and was published on 27 February 2012 in the Panamá official gazette, No. 26,981-A.
The Panamanian coat of arms is a heraldic symbol for Panama. These arms were adopted provisionally and then definitively by the same laws that adopted the Panamanian flag. The harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja), the Panamanian national bird, is the species of eagle on this coat of arms. [1]
