Although some new covered bridges have been built in Texas, none from the original covered bridge era have survived.

The earliest significant covered bridges depended on arch construction, as builders sought to capitalize on the inherent strength of that structural form. Within a decade, however, truss construction came to dominate the field of American bridge building.
