Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy subsection was added to the Surgery/General section of the CPT code set together with guidelines that provide a number of definitions and instructions for reporting. FNA biopsy procedures may be performed with or without imaging guidance.
Fine needle aspiration biopsy, also referred to as FNA, is a procedure in which a surgeon uses e fine needle and syringe for the removal of sample of tissue, cells or fluid from a lump of the patient’s body. The CPT manual describes different versions of fine needle aspiration procedures with the CPT codes 10004 until CPT 10021.
