In southern Missouri this may occur as early as mid-March; in central and northern Missouri this may not be until late March or early April. However, there are exceptions to this rule.

15 Μαρ 2024 · When is the correct time to apply crabgrass preemergence herbicides in the spring? Forsythia bush blooming on MSU’s campus on March 15, 2024. Blooming forsythia bushes are a good phenological indicator for preemergence herbicide timing.
Apply a pre-emergent crabgrass herbicide about two weeks before crabgrass seeds begin to germinate. In mid-Missouri, this would be between mid March to mid April or about the time when forsythia first begins to bloom.
8 Φεβ 2013 · The optimum time to apply your pre-emergent is when the soil temperature reaches 55 F for five consecutive days in the top inch of soil. You can be assured that annual weeds will begin to emerge at that time. Applying a pre-emergence herbicide at this time will provide the optimum length of control.

Crabgrass preventers should go down from mid-April to mid-May, which is often too early for fertilizing. For these reasons, I suggest to use caution with these products and carefully consider when would be the appropriate time to make applications depending on where you are in the state.
1 Μαρ 2024 · Given the mild winter and warm temperatures, it would best to test the soil temperature (not the air temperature) to determine when to apply crabgrass preventer. Crabgrass seed will begin to germinate once soil temperatures are above 50°F .
