15 Μαρ 2024 · The number one question I’m receiving right now is whether it’s time to apply crabgrass preemergence herbicides. There are several different methods used for determining the optimum application timing from tracking growing degree days (GDD) to looking for forsythia bush flower bloom.
Look at the column named "GDD 50". When the temperature is above 50 degrees, the GDD will increase. Its a cumulative value (see GDD 32 for an example). Crabgrass will germinate at 200 GDD with a base of 50. Apply your per-emergent before 200. Say around 150-175.
Apply crabgrass preventer in spring when soil temperatures rise to 55℉ (13℃) for 3 consecutive days. Crabgrass begins to germinate at this temperature and continues to sprout more vigorously as soil temperatures climb to 60–70℉ (16–21℃).
Apply crabgrass preventer early enough in spring. The best timing for applying crabgrass pre-emergent is when the soil temperature is between 50°F and 55°F (just before the onset of rains) This prevents germination of crabgrass weeds in your lawn.
