sis intervention model to the key components of acute and situational crises. This third edition of 32 specially designed chapters includes 14 brand new chapters and 18 thoroughly revised chapters.
Definition. Caplan (1964) initially defined a crisis as occurring when individuals are con-fronted with problems that cannot be solved. These irresolvable issues result in an increase in tension, signs of anxiety, a subsequent state of emotional unrest, and an inability to function for extended periods.
According to Slaikeu (1990), a crisis is “a temporary state of upset and disorgani-zation, characterized chiefly by an individual’s inability to cope with a particular situa-tion using customary methods of problem-solving, and by the potential for a radically positive or negative outcome” (p. 15).
This fully revised and expanded edition of the Crisis Intervention Handbook: Assessment, Treatment and Research sets a standard of care for effective treatment of persons in acute crises or trauma.
It sets out to provide help in the entire range of situations that have been referred to as crises, including violent crimes, traumatic stressors (divorce, heart attack, etc.), natural disasters, accidents, and transitional stressors (adolescence, menopause, and retirement).
