This extremely rare matched set of 4 crumhorns (soprano, alto, tenor & bass) was made by the renowned German firm Moeck-Steinkopf. This set comes from the Estate of John Benaglia, who taught music in Washington, D.C. for over 40 years.
30 Οκτ 2021 · The crumhorn is a double-reed wind-cap instrument with a cylindrical bore and a curved lower end to the body. To play, the musician blows into the protective reed cap causing the enclosed double-reeds to vibrate.

Crumhorns are capped-reed instruments of the Renaissance, They produce a unique, buzzing double-reed sound. During the Renaissance, Crumhorns did not have any upper extension keys, which is the reason they are refered to as nine-note instruments.

Unlike most modern woodwinds, the crumhorn is a windcap instrument, in which a double reed is encased in an outer enclosure. (The image to the right displays the crumhorn reed alongside a bassoon reed and oboe reed.)
