Today Broad Ripple is known for the ducks on the canal, the Monon Trail, unique shops, dining and nightclubs. BroadRippleHistory.org was started after finding an original 1922 annexation document and grows as we uncover additional sources of photographs and stories.
Located in Washington Township, Marion County, Indiana, [3] about six miles (ten kilometers) north of downtown Indianapolis, Broad Ripple was first platted in 1837, [4] became incorporated as the Town of Broad Ripple in 1894, and was annexed to the City of Indianapolis in 1922.

In 1835, Jacob Coil, his wife, and children left their home in Hamilton County, Virginia and moved to Indianapolis. Two years later, Coil surveyed 48 plots of land northeast of Indianapolis on the south bank of White River-the area which became Broad Ripple.

Broad Ripple is a northeast neighborhood bounded by White River, Evanston Avenue, Kessler Boulevard, and Meridian Street. Broad Ripple began as two separate communities alongside the Central Canal. In April 1837, Jacob Coil platted Broad Ripple north of the canal.
