Effective dose is practical because it allows comparison of differ-ent radiologic exposures (chest x-ray and an abdominal CT for example) on a common scale. It also allows compar-ison of dose from medical examinations to other forms of radiation such as cos-mic rays, radon, and occupational radi-ation exposure (64).
