Cakewalk is the most complete free option on Windows and so is GarageBand for the Mac. I guess you're on windows so go with Cakewalk and try finding 3rd party VSTs to complete it. Other DAWs have free versions with limitations (Studio One Prime, FL Studio...) or trials (Ableton Live for 90 days...).
If you are just now starting out try using Logic Pro X (Mac OS only) or Cubase (MacOS or Windows). because I have seen many professionals using it. It's like a universal thing in Film or Game music composing.
I don't know what specific people use but Logic Pro and Digital Performer are industry standard for most media composition stuff. I've heard of people using Cubase as well. I think for a DAW it's really whatever works for you best. I use Dogital Performer.
