Postpartum depression is one of the most frequent complications of childbirth affecting approximately 500,000 women annually (prevalence 10 – 15%). Despite the documented adverse outcomes for mother and child, there remains a great need to develop prospective approaches to identify women at risk.
Depression during the first year postpartum (postpartum depression) impacts millions of women and their families worldwide. In this narrative review, we provide a summary of postpartum depression, examining the etiology and consequences, pharmacological and psychological treatments, and potential mechanisms of change and current barriers to care.

Pooled prevalence in all studies was 14.0% (95%CI, 12.0%–15.0%). The prevalence varied according to country (from 5.0% to 26.32%) and developing countries, especially China, have a high prevalence of postpartum depression.
