Gagosian is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by Cy Twombly, organized in association with the Cy Twombly Foundation. Opening on January 20 across two floors of the gallery at 980 Madison Avenue, the exhibition gathers art produced in the final decade of Twombly’s life.
This exhibition explores Twombly’s lifelong fascination with the ancient Mediterranean world through evocative groupings of his paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture made from the mid-20th to the early 21st century, tracing an imaginative journey of encounters with and responses to ancient texts and artifacts.

On view at Gagosian Rome from October 30 to November 13, 2021, the exhibition surveys the photographs that Twombly took throughout his career of his studios and domestic interiors, and of classical sculptures.
The works on view in the Cy Twombly Gallery, dating from 1953 to 2004, comprise a veritable retrospective of the artist’s career, including a number of large canvases, sculptural works, and suites of paintings and drawings.
“Making Past Present: Cy Twombly” explores the artist’s lifelong fascination with the mythology, poetry, and archeology of antiquity and reveals how it shaped his creative vision. Ancient art manifests in Twombly’s work in often subtle, nonliteral forms and gestures.
The Brandhorst Museum in Munich is dedicating a large exhibition on the upper floor to the artist Cy Twombly. Twombly's works form an important cornerstone in the Brandhorst Collection, whose museum is part of the Pinakotheken.
