Do you have any concrete examples for which you need to calculate these two? It would probably make it more easy to grasp for you if I could explain it in a few examples.

The best way to think of it is that d/dx is an operator whose operand is a function, and the result is the function dy/dx, which is the derivative of the operand. This is analogous to the operators your used to from algebra, it is just is slightly more abstract.
