On June 18, 2019, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana vacated his death sentence, finding that he was ineligible for the death penalty because of intellectual disability. That ruling was affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit on September 22, 2020.
