With obituary, cemetary, and burial records, you can uncover details like: Time and location of death. Cause of death. Birth information. Next of kin and family origins. And death records are just the beginning.
Volunteers at FreeBMD transcribe the General Register Office (GRO) index which enables you to search for individual birth, marriage and death records; this is entirely free. The information (Volume and Page Number) obtained from the search result can then be used to request a certificate.
Start your search a year or two prior to the child’s birth and gradually widen your search back (and forward) in time until you locate the record. Track your ancestor year to year in City Directories to help zero in on death dates and places.
To search for a birth record, follow these steps: Go to the search function and select Records. Enter the child's name and place of birth in the appropriate fields. Click More Options and add a range of years. Click the Father and Mother buttons, and enter the parents' names.
Funeral home records vary in format and content, but they can all be valuable for determining someone’s death date. Check genealogical and historical societies; state, county, and local libraries; and municipal archives for possible holdings. Try searching our card catalog with the keyword “funeral home.”.

For example, even if you already know the death date, remember that the actual death certificate can give the names and birthplaces of parents, including the mother's maiden name. Search the parents’ names.
